Prince of the City | Sidney Lumet, 1981

Prince of the City | Sidney Lumet, 1981

Gestures towards friendship. An impassioned declaration of camaraderie and a hug between friends. Two men look each other dead in the eye and say they'll never turn on a friend, but only one of them means what he says. The other checks for a wire and leaves with protection. A corrupt cop destroyed by a fear of facing justice and willingly exploited by prosecutors to rat on his friends. Hugs are no longer hugs. Words no longer mean what they mean. His reality is rehearsal and performance, ventriloquism and puppetry. A man so far removed from morality and justice that he can't even go through the motions of his old life without thinking the worst of his closest friend.
